Introduction to Open Source Keys!

Welcome to Open Source Keys online! OSK is a new workflow system we’ve developed and want to share with the rest of the photography world. Here you’ll find downloads, templates, tips and instructions, and hopefully discussion about how to make this a better and faster system!

What is it and why?

With the release of Lightroom 2.0 many photographers have now changed their processing system to include only this program, and no longer use Photoshop. In our humble opinion, using Lightroom to fully process your images gives you incredible control over the final look of your photographs, while still being fast and efficient. It has basic functions that many people use, but also a myriad of other features that many users might not know about! By learning more about Lightroom, and fully exploring all that it can do, we’ve been able to create a unique and consistent look to our processing that we just love.

This growing use of Lightroom among wedding photographers to process their RAW images has developed a need for an efficient keyboard shortcut system. The problem is that specific and necessary functions aren’t assigned short cuts and thus the full potential for speedy Lightroom processing is limited. Also, even if all those shortcuts were mapped, all the multi-button keyboard shortcuts would slow things down. This is why several third party developers have stepped in to bridge these gaps with specialty keyboards. These keyboards are truly amazing devices that speed up workflow an unbelievable amount. Every serious professional photographer working with RAW images in Lightroom should strongly consider using one. The Open Source Keyboard utilizes the same keyboard commonly used by other third party developers, but with an open source program. A keyboard layout and layout data file (for Mac) can be downloaded below.

Eventually Open Source Keyboard layouts for other essential photography programs will be developed (Photoshop, InDesign). Take a look at the video below for a quick introduction to Open Source Keys, and check back often for new updates and tutorials.

Awesome! This is exactly what I have been wanting to make but havn’t had the time. It’s so awesome that you guys are making it open source! I can’t wait to try it out!!!

Tried with windows edition of QuicKeys under Windows 7 operating system. No dice.

The file ‘OSKshortcuts.qkmx’ does not seem to be a valid QuicKeys Export file.

Tried changing the file to a .qkx (which seems to be what it likes) no luck there either.

BTW, what resolution do you run on your 24 inch screen?

I’m looking at making this work for a windows system, screen resolution 1680×1050. If successful you will receive the file.

I will also follow the same layout you have posted here.

Hi Harvey! Thanks for taking a look to see if it would work with windows. I’ll take a look and see if I can export my QuicKeys shortcuts in a Windows friendly manner. The resolution on my 24inch monitor is 1900×1200.

QuicKeys may not be the ideal program for macro programming in windows. Actually the software that comes with the xkeys may work well for Windows (I’ll have to double check). The software that came with xkeys for Mac is absolute junk, which is why I’ve been using QuicKeys.

I have one computer that I’m dual booting with XP, I’ll do my best to see what works well, though I was really hoping the shortcut file would transfer easily. Thanks for the comments :)

    Hey Rob,

You are right, the program that comes with x- leys (MacroWorks) is good. especially for the shortcuts that are already made within lightroom. (If only lightroom was more shortcut friendly it would be amazing.) As for mouse movements. It does not have the ability, it can click, scroll, double click… but no movement recording features. So you need to pair that with quickeys, if you could somehow save it in windows friendly mode it would be awesome.

Here’s a few questions for you though, the P keys on the left that are numbered, what do they represent? Same with the T keys, V keys and D keys.

Also With the two programs, the default one and quickeys, in order to make quickeys do anything, you need to assign the mouse movement to a key. Which keys are you using for that? I find it messes with my keyboard if I start changing things. I know there are other people who have attempted these things in windows, but most seem to never post again. hmm. I’ll keep tinkering along here.

Hopefully more people will join the bandwagon and we can figure it out as one big group :)

One more note for windows 64 bit users, apparently if you program the x-keys under win xp and then tun under a 64 bit system you will be able to load the file and use it without a problem.
