Step-by-step
I’ve added a couple new pages (known issues, downloads) at the top to keep relevant info easy to access.
I realize that I haven’t had the chance to post some quick step by step instructions yet. I’m trying to share as much info as quickly as possible which is why I’ve created a couple videos, but it’s easier for some people just to skim
The following instructions are for Mac users (not yet available for windows users!).
1. Purchase the X-Keys Unit: Here
2. Purchase Quick Keys Software: Here
3. Download the JPEG
4. Download the QuicKeys keyboard shortcuts and install them in your QuicKeys OSKshortcuts
5. If your resolution is 1900×1200 then you simply need to adjust the thumbnail strip to about 1 inch high (check vignette function), and reduce the side panels to their smallest size (a video explanation fourthcoming). If your monitor is not capable of (or native to) 1900×1200 then you will need to program (record new mouse movements) the following resolution dependent keyboard shortcuts in order for them to function in lightroom.
- Any Presets you may use
- Temperature
- Exposure
- Contrast
- Blacks
- Clarity
- Fill Light
- Vignette
- Vibrance
- Saturation
- Sharpen
I’ll try to post a video soon showing how easy it is to program these functions.
6. Double check all the keys are functioning properly. You might need to reprogram a mouse movement or two to fit the way you have your thumbstrip and which controls you have open.
I also wanted to make a quick comment that I am not receiving endorsements or kickbacks by suggesting any of these products. These are the products which I have researched to be the best choice for the job. Nor is it my intention to profit or benefit from the programming and development of Open Source Keys. I just think it has been an incredibly useful tool that should be available for every photographer.
At this point it seems that there are quite a few promising leads for OSK for Windows (looks like it might be easier to do than Mac!). I’ll post more as I piece it together.
Cheers.

Hey Rob,
Just curious about this comment “r OSK for Windows (looks like it might be easier to do than Mac!).” Which route are you looking at taking? The Auto Hot keys route and the standard program that comes with x-keys?
There is also macro works, I got myself a copy, it seems alright, but not perfect, I’ll play with it some more to see where it goes, I kind of prefer Auto Hot keys, because that project is also open souce and free to everyone.
I’de like to get this thing working asap. But kind of want to stay on the same page as OSK will be on so I can help by posting files based on my resolution for others to use instead of having to program their own.

Hey Harvey, I still have to look into it more myself but you might care to take a look yourself! Apparently there is a program called AutoHotKey (AHK) which has the ability to program resolution independent shortcuts in Windows! Brian Tao from the Digital Wedding Forum posted a link in a thread about OSK there. Here it is: http://www.autohotkey.com/
You can also check out the following blog for an introduction to using it with Lightroom: http://night-ray.blogspot.com/2008/07/lightroom-2x-quick-develope-kb.html
Again I haven’t had a chance to take a look at it yet, but it sounds quite promising from his description — I just need to find something like it for mac!

I’ve seen that thread in the past, but now it has grown, it seems so simple. But if I remember correctly, when paired with the x-leys unit and assigning the keys he has listed to x-key buttons, you loose your normal keyboard functionality. Which poses a problem as well.
However I will try this again. On windows xp 32 bit, as well as vista 64 bit (in about a week and a half) and see how we can possibly make it work.
AutoHotKeys also can record mouse movements, the thing with that is, it seems to create a new executable file for each function, so when you execute the executable file, it takes a couple a second or two for it to open, which would just slow things down if you are down in the end.
I’m sure there is a way to get it to work.
Thanks for the info
PS –Would be nice to see some more participation from readers, reading the blog here as well. Make a group effort and work on this open source project the way open source is meant to be used.

It seems a little difficult communicating with each other using this blog. As there’s this Step-by-Step page and The Details page so info is a little scattered. Maybe have one area where we all post.
Anyway I have QuicKeys Mac so all I need is a keyboard. Amazon has rebate on the Logitech Q13 so I’m thinking going with this. Any thoughts on using the Q13 good or bad? Or is everyone using an X-Keys keyboard?

I just purchased the Logictech G13 Game Keyboard for $54 after rebate at Amazon. I’ve been playing around with Qiuckeys and Lightroom and yeah it’s kind of a limiting using the screen mapping and not direct keyboard shortcuts. Hope Adobe comes through to make our life easier and LR fly.
